AI Disclosure

It's important to me that you have the information you need to make decisions about the products you use. So, as the creator of Zafiro, I want to be transparent about how LLMs have been used in the build of this platform, how they are and aren't used for it's ongoing functionality, and what that means for you as a user.

Built by a real person with AI assistance

Zafiro was conceptualized, designed, and built over many months by a real person using AI assisstance to write the code. A tool like this has been on my mind for a long time, and LLMs have allowed me to build it, they way I want it, with a degree of indepedence and autonomy that would have been necessarily compromised were it to be built with handwritten code. From top to bottom, the concept of Zafiro is based on my years of experience as a visualization professional, and what I need from it as a user. I now overwhelmingly use the tool myself for visualization work, and that work informs features and refinements. This is not a "vibe-coded" product made on a whim and without oversight; it is a painstakingly constructed manifestation of my personal opinions and preferences about data visualization, combined with learnings and practices I've developed from working in tech over the last decade.

No part of Zafiro's user experience involves you interacting with LLMs. Zafiro was built with LLM assistance, but it does not call on LLMs while you use it. In app.zafiro.studio and try.zafiro.studio your charts are drawn, your data are processed, and your visualizations are published without sending anything to an AI model. The quick start feature randomly encodes a visual based on your data; it is not a suggestion or "smart" feature. I believe that there is a fundamental difference in using LLMs to do the rote work of writing code, and creating tools that depends on them without a good reason. This is a conscious choice for a variety of reasons, privacy and environmental impact being near the top.

Zafiro does not use your data to train AI

Zafiro does not use anything you do on the platform (your datasets, your visualizations, your published embeds) to train AI models for its own benefit. However, I do not currently have a system in place to monitor the third-party services and platforms that make Zafiro possible (data storage, web hosting, the browser you use, etc.), and any activity on the Internet is, to an extent, impossible to fully anonymize and protect. That said, I am not operating with the intention of collecting data of any kind from your use of Zafiro so that it can be used by AI. See Privacy for what Zafiro does store.

I do not prohibit you from using AI with Zafiro

Zafiro is source available under the O'SAASY license. It is your decision whether or not to use Zafiro in collaboration with an LLM; the code is there for you to use if you want.
